Welcome to the Air Force! Each Tuesday and Thursday I am greeted by 155 other smiling faces at 0600 in the morning. This greeting is quickly followed by hard core exercise. Although it is only one hour, let me tell you that that one hour is just about enough to do you in. To those of you who know me, you know I am not a small kid. However, in the past 3 sessions, I have managed to lose seven pounds. In the locker room, I see and talk to guys who think they are doing well to get up at seven and work out for 30 minutes. To those guys, I can only say this, are you joking?!?! I applaud your effort to better yourself, but do not try to brag about your meager accomplishments. There is not a single student in that area of the gym that is interested in your latest endeavor in the step aerobics class. Bravo for trying, but most of us just came from a real cardio workout. Aerobics can be extremely cardio intensive, do not get me wrong, but you lose a lot of respect when you say things like, “Man that was a rough step class today.” And “Wow, that aerobics class was a killer.” What is my advice? Say something like, “I am glad I finished that third mile on the track.” Or, “Wow, boxing was tough this morning.”

I came back, checked my mail, and as is the norm, none of the six pieces of mail that was in the box belonged to either my roommate or myself. This is starting to become absurd. I just smiled though and handed the misdirected mail to the lady behind the 24 hour help desk and continued back to my room. I stepped into my room, did a little sorting and organizing, then headed off to a Flight Meeting. This was an important meeting to go to, so we had more than the normal 4 who come. We had 5. Mind you that is five out of the twenty that are in my Flight (Yeah, Charlie!). We learned how to wear the uniform that we don’t have all the pieces to yet. A lot of the items are still at the tailors, so it was odd learning to wear something that you cannot look at. We had nice pictures and one shirt as a visual, but that was not a big help. Right after that meeting, I went to Honor Guard practice. We actually broke out the rifles this time instead of just learning the basics of marching and attention. We are not yet good enough to be tossing them around, but that will come. One thing that surprised me is that the rifles are so heavy. I knew that they were real rifles that had had their barrels filled to keep them from being able to fire, but they are somewhere near 15 pounds. And to be quite honest, none of the movements we do with them (even the basic ones) are done slowly and carefully as I was taught to do with things that could easily put you in a comma if it came flying at your head. Well, maybe not a coma, but it WOULD give you a really nasty goose egg and a splitting headache.
